Get In TouchWhether you’re hosting a party, a drinks & canapes event, an evening class, a talk, a workshop (candle-making, knitting, spoon carving?!), The Corn Exchange makes a fabulous venue. It’s a stunning, historic building right in the centre of Kelso.
The Corn Exchange was built in 1855 at a cost of about £3,000, with funds raised by public subscription. The architect David Cousin designed the two-storey building in a style known as ‘Cotswold Tudor’. Two small windows in the front-facing gables light up the attic. Beneath these, on the first floor, are two oriel windows, each with mullioned and transom windows typical of Tudor buildings.
The Corn Exchange originally held weekly corn markets. Later, farm labourers found employment as The Corn Exchange became a venue for ‘Hiring Fairs’, where farm labourers could find employment. These ended after World War II with the introduction of the labour exchange.
