Mary helps each of her clients in their journey with a person-centred approach to counselling. She works with them to explore and understand as much as possible about the past experiences which have impacted the way they feel about themselves or their abilities. She supports them to take steps to positive change. She sees her role as being to witness and ‘hold’ the space and offer a safe, calm and comforting environment. She also offers deep tissue massage
PERSON-CENTRED COUNSELLor, TEACHER AND MASSAGE PRACTITIONER.
Mary Gillham offers person-centred counselling to clients in the Scottish Borders, with a clinic in Kelso Health & Wellness. The person-centred approach is appropriate for all areas of counselling from relationship/family issues, to mental health, to trauma, bereavement, issues of self-confidence, sex problems and stress (to name just a few areas she can cover!).
Mary Gillham, as a person-centred counsellor, doesn’t see herself as an expert on her clients. Instead, she encourages the client to be an expert on themselves. Mary’s role is to encourage her clients to explore and understand themselves and their troubles.
She says, “Within my training I spent much time and commitment looking at my own issues, challenges and behaviours. This is a huge part of the training. If I am to sit with a client in their distress it is essential I have explored my own issues. It’s a continuous journey and I have welcomed it. I welcome it each day.”
Mary is also a teacher of complimentary therapies and offers deep tissue massage to clients.

Her work has evolved to be tailor-made to each individual according to their needs. This is helped by her greatest strength: an ability to sense another person’s physical or emotional state. That extra sense is very helpful in all of her work.
